Perspective | The best of theater in 2022

What a bit of labor is that this Pulitzer-winning, up to date riff on “Hamlet” by James Ijames (pronounced “Imes”), one of many triumvirate of inventive administrators at Philadelphia’s Wilma Theater. It takes some nerve and comedian virtuosity to tackle the English-speaking world’s most essential play and make it one’s personal. Which appears to be one of many factors of Ijames’s sharp, raucous comedy, set within the yard of a Black middle-class household, wherein a younger man by the identify of Juicy is scandalized when his scheming uncle finds his manner into his widowed mother’s affections — and mattress. Director Saheem Ali served up a glowing model at off-Broadway’s Public Theater, with a solid led by Marcel Spears, Nikki Crawford and Billy Eugene Jones, and it’s headed to Broadway within the spring.
